Ten thousand tons. Can you imagine that? That’s how much Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church weighed. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith and a feat of engineering. Right here in Chicago this magnificent structure stands proudly.

Our Lady of Lourdes began its life in 1892. A simple wooden frame building with a bell tower. It served the community for decades. But times changed. Chicago needed to widen Ashland Avenue. The church stood in its way.

Instead of demolition a bold decision was made. In 1929 they moved the entire church. Across Ashland Avenue. A foot a minute. Imagine the scene: 150 men and horses inching a ten-thousand-ton building on rollers. It took two weeks just to lift it six feet. They then cut it in half. Added a thirty-foot section. They turned it around. A truly incredible undertaking. Our Lady of Lourdes didn’t just move; it transformed.

The current building boasts a Spanish Renaissance style. It’s a beautiful example of the architectural style. In 1954 John Mallin added his artistic touch. He created a stunning mural. It depicts “The Blessing of Our Lady of Lourdes”. You can see St Bernadette’s visions. Even Cardinal Stritch of Chicago made it into the artwork. Originally more figures adorned the church. Christ and several saints were below the altar. They were removed in 1983. Now they hang in the business office. The dome itself shines with 23-carat gold mosaics of the twelve apostles.

Our Lady of Lourdes isn’t just a building. It’s a living history. It’s a symbol of resilience and faith. It houses a grotto a replica of the one in Lourdes France. This grotto served as a perpetual adoration site. It’s open 24/7 for prayer. A space for quiet reflection and connection to something larger than ourselves.

Today this remarkable church faces an uncertain future. There are efforts to save it. To preserve it as a historical landmark. To keep its story alive for generations to come. The fight to preserve Our Lady of Lourdes is a fight to preserve a piece of Chicago’s history. A testament to the enduring power of faith.
