A solemn vow echoes through time at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is a promise made during a moment of dire threat. The shrine stands in Quezon City as a beacon of faith and resilience. This story begins long before its current location. It involves war, devotion and a miraculous intervention.

Originally, the church was in Intramuros. The Capuchin friars built the first chapel there and opened it in 1892. Father Bernardo de Cieza commissioned Manuel Flores to sculpt an image of Our Lady of Lourdes. This statue was meant for a grotto. But its beauty led to it being placed inside the chapel.

Devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes grew quickly. In 1894, a second image was commissioned. Carmen Macan funded this project. This second image was even more beautiful. It was placed in the chapel in 1896.

Soon after, Doña Martina Azucena was miraculously cured. She had a tumor in her lungs and was near death. After praying before the image she felt strength return. She attributed her healing to Our Lady of Lourdes. Every year she offered a Mass in thanksgiving.

In 1898, Manila faced a great threat. The United States Navy arrived and demanded Spain’s surrender. The Americans threatened to bomb the city. Capuchin Superior Fr. Alfonso de Morentin made a vow. He prostrated himself before the image of Our Lady of Lourdes. He promised to dedicate their new church to her if Manila was spared. The deadline passed and the city was saved.

True to his word Fr. Morentin consecrated the new church to Our Lady of Lourdes. The church was officially inaugurated on February 3, 1910. For years the church served as a focal point for devotees.

World War II brought destruction. The original Intramuros church was destroyed during the war. But miraculously the images of Our Lady of Lourdes survived. They were hidden in the sacristy of San Agustin Church. Later, they were moved to a chapel in Quezon City.

After the war the Capuchins sought to rebuild. They acquired land in Quezon City. Construction began in 1950. The new church was designed by architect Luis María Araneta. On February 10, 1951, the images were moved to the new church. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes was inaugurated on August 15, 1951.

Over the years the shrine’s importance grew. In 1997, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines declared it a national shrine. In 2019, Pope Francis granted a decree of canonical coronation. The image was crowned on August 22, 2020.

Today the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes stands as a testament to faith. It is a place of pilgrimage and prayer. It is a reminder of a vow made and a city saved. As you stand before this sacred place remember the story. Remember the power of devotion and the promise that echoes through these walls.
