“A promise of protection fulfilled.” That’s the story etched in every stone of Our Lady of Lourdes in Shanghai. This chapel stands as a testament to faith. It is a beacon of hope for the community.

Our Lady of Lourdes in Shanghai. It is a place where serenity meets devotion. Although reviews are not yet available it is still visited. The address is North of Xianyu Bridge. It is located by Xupu River.

Now, let’s step back in time. Imagine Shanghai during a period of uncertainty. The story of Our Lady of Sheshan offers a glimpse into the historical context of faith in this region.

In 1863, the Superior of the Jesuit community in Shanghai made a significant purchase. He acquired land on the south side of Sheshan Mountain. The Jesuits built a retreat house there. It was meant for retired Jesuit Fathers. A small chapel was built next door. This marked the beginning of a sacred space.

A pivotal moment arrived during the Taiping Rebellion. Fr. Gu Zhen Sheng was the Superior of the Jesuit community in Shanghai. He made a solemn promise to the Blessed Virgin. If the diocese was spared from attack he would build a basilica. It would be in thanksgiving for Our Lady’s special protection.

The diocese was indeed spared. Fr. Gu made his invocation known in September 1870. He shared his promise to build a new church. He explained the details to the faithful. Donations were sought to realize this grand basilica.

The cornerstone of the new church was laid on May 24, 1871. Bishop Languillat of Shanghai presided over the ceremony. Six thousand people were present. Generous offerings from the faithful made it possible.

Bishop Languillat consecrated the great Basilica on April 15, 1873. From that day forward Our Lady of Sheshan became the special protector of the Diocese of Shanghai. Pilgrims flocked to the shrine. In 1874, Pope Pius IX granted an indulgence. It was for all pilgrims who completed their journey during May.

The devotion to Our Lady of Sheshan grew stronger. In 1894, Catholics built a church mid-mountain. It was dedicated to Our Lady as Mediatrix. Three chapels followed. They honored the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Shrine has seen restoration and additions over time. The modern-day Shrine dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians of Sheshan is Roman-style. It measures 56 meters long, 25 meters wide, and 17 meters high. A bell tower rises 38 meters. Atop the tower is a bronze statue of the Virgin Mary. It weighs 2 tons and stands 3.87 meters high. The Basilica can hold 3000. It is known as the first basilica of eastern Asia.

Even after the revolution the Basilica came back to life. Faithful from all over China and Asia come to the shrine. They pay homage to the Blessed Mother.

In 1924, bishops in Shanghai adopted an image. It was Our Lady of China or Our Lady Queen of China. A painting was commissioned and hung in a local church.

A new statue was constructed in April 2000. Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian blessed it. The image features the Blessed Virgin Mary carrying a Child Jesus. His arms are outstretched in a cruciform gesture. The base shows a Chinese dragon being crushed by the Madonna.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI received a copy of the statue. He invoked the Marian title. He requested the prayer be recited on May 24. It is the feast of Mary Help of Christians. The Shanghai Government later banned pilgrimages from neighboring dioceses.

Our Lady of Lourdes continues to inspire. It stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It reminds us of the power of community and devotion.
