A wave of devotion washes over you. You stand before the Our Lady of Guadalupe statue in Chicago. Its towering presence is awe-inspiring. This isn’t just any statue. This is a powerful symbol of faith. A beacon for the community.

The story begins in 1987. Joaquin Martinez brought a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe from Mexico. He and other devotees started a pilgrimage. The statue traveled to parishes and homes. It spread devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Chicago.

This mission coincided with the Marian Year declared by Pope John Paul II. Father Robert Harne blessed the statue at Lake Opeka Park. In 1988 the statue found a home at Maryville Academy. Most Reverend Placido Rodriguez blessed it.

Then in 1995 an outdoor shrine was built. It’s modeled after Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City. They call it El Cerrito. It became the main place to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1996 a digital replica of her image arrived from Mexico. It was the first sent internationally.

In 1997 Monsignor Esteban Martinez blessed the site. He named it Cerrito del Tepeyac de Chicago. He even brought soil from the original Cerro del Tepeyac. This created a strong connection between the Chicago shrine and the Basilica in Mexico. Pilgrims could fulfill their promises there.

A magnificent sculpture The Offering was added in 2001. It weighs over two tons. Auxiliary Bishop John R Manz blessed it. The statue of the Virgin is 12 feet tall. St Juan Diego’s statue is 6 feet tall.

The shrine grew. In 2008 Cardinal Francis George designated 62.5 acres. It became the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. By 2013 it was the most visited Guadalupe shrine in the USA. It was second only to the Basilica in Mexico City.

Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Blase Cupich. He celebrated his first feast of Guadalupe at the shrine in 2015. Over 350000 people came. The devotion is immense.

The shrine continues to grow. A chapel for St Joseph is planned. Pilgrims from near and far come to seek solace and hope. The Our Lady of Guadalupe statue in Chicago stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and community. A place where prayers are answered and devotion lives on.
