Gazing up at Our Lady of Dolours, did you notice the subtle shift in its name? It was once known as Our Lady of the Seven Dolours, a name echoing the seven sorrows of Mary. Now simply Our Lady of Dolours, located on Fulham Road in Chelsea, this church has been a beacon of faith since its consecration in 1875. Our Lady of Dolours isn’t just a beautiful building, it’s a testament to the dedication of two Italian Servite priests, Father Philip Bosio and Father Augustine Morini. Arriving in London in 1864, they saw a need and sought to fill it. They responded to a shortage of Catholic priests following the resumption of public Catholic services after a long hiatus. The church they envisioned, designed by the renowned J.A. Hansom, the architect behind the iconic Hansom cab, opened its doors just eleven years later. Our Lady of Dolours quickly became a cherished place of worship. Its Gothic Revival architecture, a striking example of Hansom’s skill, stands as a landmark in the heart of Chelsea. Look closely at the entrance colonnade. It’s a unique feature, added in 1894, not found in other English churches. Inside, treasures await. Bronzes of the Redeemer and St. Peter, crafted by Mayer in 1872, and The Holy Face, after Lorenzo di Credi, from 1895. Admire Swynnerton’s Pietà, sculpted in 1896. The church has seen countless souls pass through its doors, each with their own story. One such story is that of Carlo Acutis. This young boy, whose family was briefly residing in London, was baptized at Our Lady of Dolours in 1991. Years later, Carlo, whose life was tragically cut short by Leukemia at the age of 15, was beatified in Assisi Cathedral in 2020. Our Lady of Dolours continues to serve both local residents and a diverse international Catholic community. It’s a place of solace, a place of history, and a place where faith has flourished for over a century. As you leave, remember its story, a story of dedication, faith, and the enduring spirit of Our Lady of Dolours.
