In 1911, a simple altar of packing cases held the hopes of a new parish. Our Lady Help of Christians Church in East Brunswick had humble beginnings. Father Joseph King led the first mass in the Excelsior Hall on Nicholson Street. Can you imagine the scene? The makeshift altar, the determined faces of the early parishioners, the shared dream of a permanent church. Our Lady Help of Christians Church quickly outgrew its temporary home. A church-school was built on land donated by Archbishop Carr. This first structure, blessed and opened in November 1911, served a dual purpose. It nurtured both the spiritual and educational needs of the growing community. But Father King had a grander vision. He set his sights on an abandoned quarry at the corner of Barkly and Nicholson Streets. In 1916, the foundation stone for a new Our Lady Help of Christians Church was laid. The church, though unfinished, opened its doors on Pentecost Sunday in 1918. The statue of Our Lady atop the tower, a beacon visible across Melbourne, was installed that same year. It was the first of its kind in Australia, a testament to the devotion of the parish. Our Lady Help of Christians Church wasn’t just a building. It was a symbol of faith, perseverance, and community. The church continued to evolve over the years. Stained glass windows, crafted in Munich, added beauty and told stories of faith. A bell, named Mary, called parishioners to worship. A painting of Our Lady Help of Christians, a gift from a grieving mother, graced the sanctuary. Father King, sadly, didn’t live to see his vision fully realized. He died in 1935 and was buried on the church grounds. But his legacy lives on in the vibrant community of Our Lady Help of Christians Church. The church, finally completed in 1994, stands as a testament to his dedication and the enduring faith of the parishioners.
