Atop Ōtuataua stands a silent sentinel. Its crater a testament to fiery pasts. This is Ōtuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve. It’s more than just a volcano. It’s a treasure a taonga for Te Wai-o-Hua.

Ōtuataua is a significant archaeological site. It preserves a unique cultural heritage. It’s 109 hectares of history. Remnants of two small volcanoes rise here Ōtuataua and Puketāpapa. They are part of the Auckland volcanic field.

Imagine Māori farmers. They used the warm volcanic stones. They extended the growing season for crops. Taro and kumara thrived a month longer than expected. This ingenious farming technique shaped the landscape. It left behind visible mounds in the stonefields. These were not merely random piles of rock. They were carefully constructed garden plots. They trapped the sun’s warmth keeping the soil fertile.

Later European settlers arrived. They repurposed the stones. They built impressive dry-stone walls. These walls fenced their farms. They modified the landscape further. They overlaid the ancient Māori patterns with their own. The stone walls remain a testament to both cultures. The interwoven histories of Ihumātao and Ōtuataua reflect Auckland’s rich past.

The reserve is not just about rocks and walls. A diverse ecosystem flourishes here. Native birds like pīwakawaka fantails tūī kererū and tauhou silvereyes flit among the trees. Native lizards scurry amongst the volcanic rocks. The coastal edge supports shorebirds too. Torea South Island pied oystercatchers kuaka bar-tailed godwits and huahou red knots find refuge in the intertidal flats. Three small remnants of volcanic rock forest survive. They’re critically endangered. Trees like pūriri porokaiwhiri pigeonwood ngaio and māhoe add to the rich tapestry of life here.

Ōtuataua’s history stretches back to the 14th century. Māori first settled this area. They built a pā a fortified village on the volcano’s slopes. Intensive gardening on the lower slopes provided sustenance. The fertile volcanic soils and proximity to the Manukau Harbour ensured abundance. The harbour offered fish and a vital shark fishery. Sadly the volcano’s cone was quarried in the 1950s. The scoria was used to build Auckland Airport.

Ōtuataua’s past isn’t just about farming and defence. The pã served as more than a fortress. It embodied the identity of the iwi. The stonefields the pã and the houses created a unified landscape. It reflected the community’s values and beliefs. Ōtuataua whispers of a way of life long gone. It’s a tangible link to a rich and complex history. It’s a site worthy of respect and preservation for generations to come. This is not just a historical reserve. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of a people and their connection to the land.
