The imposing Amtshof, a building that’s steeped in history, stands before us. Its walls have witnessed centuries of change, echoing the stories of the people who have lived and worked here. The Ottersberg, as it’s known, was once a formidable fortress, a vital stronghold in a time when the region was a constant battleground. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it was known as Boberg, fiercely contested by the Archbishopric of Bremen and the Diocese of Verden. The fortress would endure numerous attacks, its ownership shifting like the sands of the Wümme River that flows nearby. In 1675, the Bishop of Münster, Count Bernhard von Galen, captured the Ottersberg, ordering the nearby town to be demolished to fortify the castle even further. In 1677, the town was rebuilt, and the Ottersberg would continue to evolve through the centuries.
Today, the Ottersberg is home to the Free Rudolf Steiner School, a vibrant community of students and teachers. It’s a stark contrast to the castle’s original purpose, yet the building’s grandeur remains, a silent reminder of its past. As you wander through the Amtshof, you can almost feel the echoes of its history, the clash of swords, the shouts of soldiers, and the quiet hum of life in the nearby village.
This beautiful place, imbued with stories of bravery, conflict, and change, offers a glimpse into a captivating past. The Ottersberg, once a symbol of power and defense, now stands as a testament to the ever-changing nature of history, quietly keeping watch over the Wümme Valley.
