Slipping through the heart of South Auckland, Otaimako Creek whispers stories of a vibrant past. Otaimako Creek isn’t just a waterway. It’s a thread woven through the history of the Auckland region. This tidal channel, known in Māori as Te Waiōtara, or “The Waters of Tara,” honors Tara Te Irirangi, a respected Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki rangatira from the early 19th century. Before European settlers arrived and called it Goodfellow’s Creek, Māori relied on Otaimako Creek for sustenance, gathering koura (freshwater crayfish) and eels from its waters. The creek’s banks were dotted with kāinga (villages), bustling centers of life for Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. Today, remnants of this rich history still cling to the edges of Otaimako Creek. The creek begins its journey near Allenby Park and Papatoetoe High School, flowing north through Papatoetoe and Ōtara. It eventually transforms into a tidal estuary, a natural boundary between Ōtara and East Tāmaki. This estuary flows into Pukewairiki, a volcanic crater formed by an eruption approximately 130,000 years ago. Otaimako Creek has seen significant changes over the years. In 2007, a 210-meter bridge was built at its mouth as part of a new motorway exchange. More recently, in 2020, a pedestrian bridge graced the creek at Ōtara Creek Reserve, adding a touch of modern artistry to the landscape. The Ōtara Waterways & Lake Trust, formed in 2016, champions the creek’s health, working tirelessly to clean and revitalize this vital waterway. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of the past mingling with the present, the whispers of Tara Te Irirangi carried on the gentle current of Otaimako Creek.
