Did you know that Østerbro wasn’t always the fancy place it is today? Today, we find ourselves in Østerbro. It is one of Copenhagen’s ten official districts. Østerbro sits just north of the city center.

Once upon a time in the 1800s, this area was a no-build zone. Cows grazed here. Grassy meadows stretched as far as the eye could see. Copenhageners came here to escape the city’s noise.

Østerbro now stands as one of Copenhagen’s most attractive residential areas. Families and dogs love it here. Østerbro is one of the greenest areas in the city.

We are near Fælledparken. It is Denmark’s largest public park. You can find sports facilities and playgrounds here. Football grounds and the national stadium are also here. There are even areas where dogs can run free.

Østerbro is close to the water. Svanemøllen has a new beach park. We are not far from Copenhagen’s lakes. The Citadel grounds are nearby. The Little Mermaid statue is a short walk away on Copenhagen’s waterfront.

Walking through Østerbro, you will find designer shops. Normann Copenhagen, Rambow, and Moshi Moshi are a few. Restaurants and cafes dot the streets. Østerbro wasn’t built up as quickly as its neighbors after a cholera epidemic. Nørrebro and Vesterbro grew faster. The bourgeoisie settled here in pompous villas. Green gardens surrounded them. This image has stuck with the district. Many mansions still stand. Foreign embassies occupy many of them now.

Take a walk to see the Potato Rows or Brumleby. These cute old townhouses were built in the late 1800s. They provided workers with better housing outside the city walls.

Østerbrogade 105 stands as a modern building here. It was built on a vacant site. A car dealer once had a multi-story building here. The architects wanted to create a dialogue with the surrounding buildings. One was designed by Anton Rosen, a famous Danish architect.

The building features heavy brickwork. It stretches along its entire length. A light glass wall encloses the tall ground floor. The contrast gives the building a modern touch.

Modern bays are inserted into the surface. Residents can step out and capture the street’s perspective. The bays are staggered. This creates a diagonal displacement within the apartments. Light from the south enters the bays. This creates a dynamic between the rooms.

The ground floor has shops and cafes. The complex has 55 rented dwellings. The materials are brick, copper, and glass. Østerbrogade 105 was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007. It also won the Copenhagen Municipality Building Award in 2007.

From grazing cows to designer shops, Østerbro has transformed. It is now a vibrant and desirable district. Remember its humble beginnings as you explore this area. Its rich history and modern attractions create a unique Copenhagen experience.
