Tucked away in the basement of a community center, Østerbro lille Museum holds the secrets of Copenhagen’s Østerbro district. Østerbro lille Museum isn’t your typical museum. It began as the personal collection of Helge Østergaard. He had a passion for local history. He filled his collection with photos, books, and artifacts. Helge also ran a local history-themed restaurant with his wife for 12 years. Diners enjoyed delicious meals alongside captivating stories and slideshows about Østerbro. When the Østergaards moved to Bornholm in 2005, their collection found a new home. Carl Einar Jørgensen, chairman of the local community center Nabo Østerbro, purchased the collection. With support from Nordea Bank, local church funds, and private donors, Østerbro lille Museum was born. The museum aims to showcase the historical development of Østerbro from the past to the present. Inside Østerbro lille Museum, you’ll discover a treasure trove of local history. An archive documents most of Østerbro’s streets, complete with photographs. A small library holds personal narratives. These offer intimate glimpses into the neighborhood’s past. A model of Copenhagen’s harbor from the 1950s sits alongside images capturing key moments in Østerbro’s history. Østerbro lille Museum is located in the basement of the community center at Nyborggade 9. It’s open every Friday or by appointment. The museum even has a dedicated Friends association. They help with everything from arranging exhibits to cataloging the collection. Østerbro lille Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts. It’s a living testament to the rich history of Østerbro. A visit here offers a unique opportunity to connect with the heart and soul of this vibrant Copenhagen district.
