Perhaps you noticed the ALDI store on the ground floor. But above it lies a cultural gem the Ost-Passage Theater.

The Ost-Passage Theater wasn’t always a theater. It started as a market hall in 1909. Just a few years later in 1912 it transformed into a cinema. Back then it was also named Ost-Passage Theater. For a short time it was Leipzig’s second-largest cinema. Imagine 675 seats filled with moviegoers.

However the cinema closed in 1962 due to its poor condition. The building then served various purposes including a church and storage space.

Fast forward to 2011. An initiative emerged with a vision a neighborhood stage. They successfully persuaded the owner to transform the upper floor. The Ost-Passage Theater was reborn. The grand reopening took place on March 9 2018.

Today the Ost-Passage Theater offers 96 seats. Its stage covers nearly 70 square meters. Around 190 events take place here each year. The program ranges from theater and music to readings and workshops.

The Ost-Passage Theater is more than just a venue. It’s a community project. A dedicated team of mostly volunteers runs the theater. They work hard to create a vibrant cultural space for Leipzig’s east side.

The Ost-Passage Theater actively collaborates with other theaters in Leipzig. Together they enrich the city’s theater scene. They ensure that theater remains an integral part of the community. So next time you are here take a moment to appreciate the Ost-Passage Theater. It is a place where history meets community. It is a place where art comes alive.
