What secrets lie beneath the imposing Ossuaire Militaire Obelisk? We stand before the Ossuaire Militaire, a solemn monument on the Verdun battlefield. This obelisk marks a site of immense loss, a place where the echoes of war still linger. The Battle of Verdun, fought between February and December 1916, claimed the lives of approximately 300,000 French and German soldiers. The Ossuaire Militaire is not far from Douaumont Ossuary. The Douaumont Ossuary houses the remains of 130,000 unidentified soldiers from both sides of the conflict. The ossuary’s tower, the Lantern of the Dead, stands 46 meters tall, symbolizing the 46 sectors of the Verdun battlefield. It casts a somber light across the landscape, a beacon of remembrance. Imagine the scale of the battle. The fighting was concentrated in an area of just 20 square kilometers. The ground beneath our feet still holds the remains of 160,000 soldiers who were never recovered. Nature has reclaimed much of the battlefield. Trees and bushes grow where trenches and shell craters once scarred the earth. Yet, every year, the remains of a few soldiers are unearthed, a stark reminder of the war’s enduring presence. One such discovery in 2013 revealed the skeletons of 26 French soldiers in the cellar of a destroyed dressing station. Only seven could be identified. The Ossuaire Militaire Obelisk stands as a silent sentinel, a testament to the sacrifices made during the Battle of Verdun. It serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating cost of war and the enduring search for peace.
