Farmers trapped, shot, and poisoned the oso grizzly. By the 1930s, they had become scarce. Their range shrunk to three isolated mountains in Chihuahua. Only about 30 bears remained by 1960.
Despite being a protected species, hunting continued. The Mexican grizzly was declared extinct in 1964. A biologist searched for survivors in 1968 but found none. One oso grizzly was shot in Sonora in 1976.
Today, the oso grizzly is presumed extinct. Some believe it may be extirpated which means locally extinct. Its disappearance has impacted Mexico’s ecosystem.
