Across the cobblestones of Istanbul’s Fatih district stand the Osman Aga Houses. These unassuming structures hold a secret. They whisper tales of a fascinating Ottoman figure Osman Aga of Temesvar.

Osman Aga was no ordinary man. He was an Ottoman army officer a historian and a travel writer. His life was a blend of military service and unexpected captivity. He was one of the few Turkish-language autobiographers of his time. His autobiography details his incredible adventures and imprisonment in Habsburg Austria.

Imagine a young Osman Aga. He’s a low-ranking officer in Temesvar. He excels at languages and horsemanship. The Siege of Vienna in 1683 changes everything. The tide turns against the Ottomans. Osman’s squadron is attacked by superior Austrian forces. At the age of 18 he becomes a prisoner of war.

His captivity was far from uneventful. Sold to various masters in Kapfenberg and Vienna he faced hardship and brutality. He was beaten and whipped. Yet his skills and linguistic talent helped him endure. He refused offers of freedom in exchange for converting to Christianity. This shows his strength of character and devotion to his faith.

After the Treaty of Karlowitz Osman Aga returned to Temesvar in 1700. His German language skills made him a valuable asset. He became the official dragoman or translator of Temesvar. He served in several diplomatic missions to Austria.

A new war broke out in 1715. The Austrians captured Temesvar and then Belgrade. Tragedy struck Osman Aga. Most of his family perished in the explosion of Belgrade’s ammunition dump.

He eventually found himself in Istanbul where he continued his civil service as a dragoman. There he wrote his most important work Prisoner of the Infidels. This book recounts his Austrian adventures. He also started Austrian History an unfinished work. His other writings detail his diplomatic missions.
