Ever wondered what secrets lie beneath the shimmering surface of Orpheus Bay? This tranquil expanse of water, nestled at the entrance to Auckland’s Manukau Harbour, holds a tragic tale. Orpheus Bay is named after HMS Orpheus, a majestic vessel that met a devastating end. It was a beautiful sunny day, February 7, 1863, when the unimaginable happened. HMS Orpheus, flagship of the Royal Navy’s Australian squadron, was sailing into the harbour. Suddenly, the ship struck a hidden sandbar. The impact was catastrophic. Of the 259 souls aboard, only 70 survived. The sinking of the Orpheus remains New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster. The loss of life was staggering, surpassed only by the 1931 Hawkes Bay Earthquake and the 1979 Erebus disaster. The tragedy deeply affected both New Zealand and Australia. The Orpheus was, after all, the flagship of the Australian squadron. Newspapers across both countries reported on the heartbreaking event. A particularly poignant poem, published in the Sydney Morning Herald on February 24, 1863, captured the grief and loss. It speaks of “twice fourscore true British hearts / All cold beneath the main!” It paints a vivid picture of the disaster, from the false chart and breeze that led the ship astray to the final, heart-wrenching cheers of the men clinging to the masts. The disaster at Orpheus Bay serves as a sobering reminder of the power of the sea. The 150th anniversary of the sinking was commemorated on Whatipu Beach. The ceremony brought together various perspectives on the tragedy, including those of Maori who saw the ship as a threat, and the recollections of a sacred puriri tree felled the day before, an act believed to have caused the disaster. As you gaze upon Orpheus Bay, remember the tragic tale of HMS Orpheus. Remember the lives lost. Remember the bravery of those who perished.
