Oriole Park, a green oasis in Norwood Park, whispers tales of community spirit. Oriole Park takes its name from the surrounding subdivision. The neighborhood began to fill with single-family homes in the 1920s. Newly affordable automobiles allowed middle-class families to move further out.
Oriole Park was created by the Edison Park District. This was one of 22 independent park boards. In 1934, they consolidated into the Chicago Park District. Years before, a committee of the 77th Avenue Improvement Club urged action. They wanted the Edison Park District to create a playground along Oriole Avenue. The local park district purchased the land in mid-1931. By late the following year, the city had vacated an adjacent alley. This brought the park to 2.29 acres.
The Edison Park District considered a softball field. But it made few improvements to the swampy site. Still, local children used the new park. A neighboring farmer asked for a fence. He wanted to prevent stray baseballs from ruining his crops. After the 1934 transfer to the Chicago Park District, improvements began. A softball diamond and a playground were installed at Oriole Park.
After World War II, the park district expanded. It added more than 16 acres to the park. This anticipated increased population. The Northwest Highway was under construction then. For a time, the park district and the Chicago Board of Education cooperated. They provided joint programming at the park and the adjacent Oriole Park School. This ended in the early 1970s. A large fieldhouse was constructed in the park then.
During the 1990s, Oriole Park received upgrades. These included a new soft surface playground. It also got an interactive waterplay area. Today, Oriole Park boasts seven baseball and softball diamonds. The Oriole Park Baseball Association thrives. It is considered one of the top 5 baseball programs in the country. Over 1500 participants enroll annually.
But Oriole Park offers more than just sports. It provides a variety of activities for all ages. Archery instruction is available for kids and teens. There is Art and ABCs for the little ones. Arts and Crafts engage children aged 6 to 10. Dodgeball, Fun and Games, and Indoor Soccer are also popular. Moms, Pops and Tots Interaction fosters early childhood development.
Pickleball, Play School, and Stretching cater to diverse interests. Table Tennis welcomes players of all skill levels. Tap and Ballet, and Tiny Tot Dance introduce children to the arts. Young Scientist sparks curiosity in science. Special Olympics Fun and Games promotes inclusivity. Basketball Skills and Baseball Skills enhance athletic abilities. There is even Girls Fast Pitch Softball.
Oriole Park also hosts leagues and open play. There is a Womens Volleyball League. A Floor Hockey League attracts individual players. Basketball – Family encourages bonding. Pickleball – Open provides casual play. A Senior Citizens Club offers social interaction. A Teen Club engages older kids. Bags offers simple fun.
