Oriental Pearl Tower

It is a symbol of Shanghai’s rise as a global metropolis. This impressive structure is officially known as the Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower. It was built between 1991 and 1994. The Oriental Pearl Tower held the title of China’s tallest structure until 2007 when the nearby World Financial Center was completed. It remains a cultural icon, drawing millions of visitors every year. Its unique design was inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem, “Pipa xing” by Bai Juyi. The three main spheres are meant to resemble pearls. They’re connected by pillars, creating a dynamic and visually striking silhouette. The tower reaches a height of 468 meters, including its 137-meter antenna. This makes it the third tallest TV and radio tower in Asia. There are fifteen observation decks offering breathtaking views of Shanghai. Inside the tower, you’ll find various attractions. There is a revolving restaurant, a museum, even an indoor roller coaster. Between two of the large spheres, you can find the Space Hotel. It offers a unique overnight experience with panoramic city views. The tower’s construction on soft ground posed a unique challenge. Engineers overcame this by using deep concrete pillars, steel pipes, and plates for support. This innovative technique paved the way for other skyscrapers in Shanghai. The Oriental Pearl Tower officially opened to the public on May 1, 1995. It began broadcasting nine TV and ten FM radio programs. This greatly improved signal quality across Shanghai. The tower quickly became a symbol of pride. It has earned a spot on China’s list of AAAAA Tourist Attractions. It regularly appears in films, TV shows, and artwork. It showcases the city’s modernity and dynamism.
