Remember the Orient Queen? A majestic cruise ship once gracing Beirut’s waters. She wasn’t just any vessel. The Orient Queen held a special place in the hearts of many. She carried dreams across the Mediterranean. Her elegant lines and the promise of adventure captivated all who saw her.

Built in 1989 in Valencia Spain the Orient Queen originally sailed under the name Vistamar. She journeyed through the Caribbean the Mediterranean and even ventured to the Arctic and Antarctic. Remarkably she was the first large cruise ship to navigate the Amazon River all the way to Iquitos Peru. A feat of nautical engineering. A testament to her resilience and capability.

Owned by the Abou Merhi Group her homeport was Beirut. She offered cruises around the Eastern Mediterranean visiting Greece and Turkey. Passengers would enjoy the luxurious amenities. They would marvel at her elegant cabins and savor delicious meals. The ship could accommodate 370 guests. She provided a truly unforgettable experience.

Then came August 4 2020. The devastating ammonium nitrate explosion rocked Beirut. The blast severely damaged the Orient Queen. She listed to starboard. Two Filipino crew members tragically lost their lives. Several others suffered injuries. One crewmember described the devastation. The ship he said was totally destroyed.

The Orient Queen capsized that night. She partially sank. The once proud vessel was now a tragic symbol. A symbol of Beirut’s heartbreaking loss. The incident showcased the sheer power of the explosion. It affected not only the Orient Queen but also other ships.

The Abou Merhi Group the owners filed a lawsuit. They sought justice for the loss of their prized ship. The Orient Queen’s legacy lives on. Her story serves as a grim reminder of the catastrophic events of that day. She was more than just a ship she was a symbol. A symbol of the beauty and the fragility of life itself.

In July 2022 the Orient Queen was scrapped. Her remains were broken up. Yet her story her voyages her spirit remain. They remain in our memories. In our hearts she continues to sail on. The Orient Queen a legend of the sea a poignant reminder of the past.
