Hidden beneath the bustling city of Budapest lies a secret. A secret whispered through the ages. It’s the story of the Ördög-árok Csörsz-árok a fascinating network of ancient ditches.

Right here before us lies a remnant of this incredible system. This isn’t just any ditch. It’s part of a vast network stretching 1260 kilometers across three countries. Imagine the sheer scale of this undertaking. This system connects the Danube and the Tisza rivers. It runs all the way to the lower Danube. Its history goes back at least 1700 years.

Some believe that the ditches were built by Sarmatians during the migration period. They were guided by Roman engineering principles. Fifteen million cubic meters of earth were moved. This created one of the most monumental earthworks in the Carpathian Basin.

The asymmetrical ditches were dug. Then the excavated earth was piled up as ramparts. Originally they were 2.5 meters deep. Their width varied from 3 to 10 meters. These ditches were never simply abandoned. They served many purposes over the centuries.

In some places they marked borders such as between Kerepes and Mogyoród. Elsewhere they formed national boundaries like near Geszt. In other areas water was channeled through them like the Gyöngyös-patak. In still other locations railway tracks were laid within them like near Kunszentmárton.

People always recognized that these weren’t natural formations. Different sections of the Csörsz-árok system were given different names. Ördög-árok Ördög-barázda Ördög út Papok sánca Tsehek árka Csesz árka Cseres árka Avar-árok Hun-árok Attila útja Tündérek útja Szépasszonyok útja Kakas barázda Traján fala Római sánc are just a few of the names given to these ditches.

The people wove a rich mythology around the Csörsz-árok system. Many of these myths relate to water. Experts in water management focus on the system’s hydrological significance. Ancient maps depict the ditches as ramparts. Even Marsigli’s map from 1741 showing Roman remains labels them as ditches.

The Csörsz-árok system connects people. It connects villages towns regions and even countries. This system connected people from children to the elderly. It linked communities across borders. The Ördög-árok is a piece of that incredible legacy. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who lived here centuries ago. A legacy that continues to fascinate and inspire us even today.
