Do you seek solace in the heart of Lisbon? Look no further than the Oratório S. Josemaria. This modern sanctuary, nestled within the bustling city, offers a tranquil escape. The Oratório S. Josemaria was dedicated on March 21, 1998. It is part of the Montes Claros University College but operates independently. The oratory sits within the Parish of São Domingos de Benfica. Architects José Maria Coelho and Alfonso Fungarinho designed this three-story structure. It houses a chapel, choir, auditorium, meeting rooms, and two spacious atriums. The interior of Oratório S. Josemaria is a symphony of simple lines and harmonious materials. Wood, stained glass, and marble in various hues create a serene atmosphere. A magnificent, large altarpiece commands attention. The chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament is a particularly inviting space for prayer within the Oratório S. Josemaria. A gilded, Luso-oriental tabernacle from the 16th-18th centuries holds a unique representation of the Child Jesus. Its dome is topped by a pelican, a Eucharistic symbol. A vibrant mural of the Annunciation by Margarida Henriques frames the tabernacle. Above the altar, a golden reliquary holds a relic of St. Josemaria, the oratory’s namesake. Six spacious confessionals seamlessly blend into the architecture near the entrance of the Oratório S. Josemaria. The main altarpiece draws inspiration from Opus Dei’s contribution to the Church’s evangelizing mission. Five copper panels with relief representations form the altarpiece. Master Alípio Pinto, with the help of António José Pereira, crafted the larger central panel. This panel depicts the Holy Mass. Jesus Christ hangs on the cross above the altar. St. Josemaria celebrates the Eucharist, elevating the consecrated Host, surrounded by a diverse group of faithful. An inscription at the bottom reads, “ET EGO, SI EXALTATUS FUERO A TERRA, OMNIA TRAHAM AD MEIPSUM.” This translates to, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). This quote reflects a profound moment during Mass on August 7, 1931. Just as Christ’s sacrifice on the cross draws all creation to Him, so too do Christians strive to reconcile all things with God. The presence of angels alludes to St. Josemaria’s belief in their presence during Mass. Side panels depict scenes significant to the founder. These include the Holy Family in Joseph’s workshop, the Wedding at Cana, the Calling of St. Matthew, and the Calling of the Apostles. Statues of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Fatima flank the Oratório S. Josemaria’s altar. Stained-glass windows, designed by Manuel Ortiz, depict other patrons and intercessors of Opus Dei. These include St. Raphael and St. John, St. Gabriel and St. Paul, and St. Michael and St. Peter. Other intercessors are St. Pius X, St. Thomas More, St. Nicholas of Bari, the Curé of Ars, and St. Catherine of Siena. As you leave the Oratório S. Josemaria, carry with you the spirit of peace and contemplation you found within its walls.
