A place of adornment they called it. That’s what the Maori name Ōrākei means. But the story of Ōrākei is far richer than simple adornment. It’s a story etched in the very land itself a story of conflict and resilience.

Here we stand overlooking Hobson Bay and Ōrākei Basin. Ōrākei is a suburb on a peninsula a short distance from Auckland’s city centre. This seemingly tranquil area holds a complex past. It’s a place where the whispers of ancient Maori life mingle with the echoes of colonial clashes.

For centuries before European arrival Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei called this land home. They fished in the harbour farmed the land. It was a place of significance. Then came the waves of colonisation. The New Zealand Government took much of the land. The process of confiscation stretched from the 1840s to the 1950s.

Even the humble kumara played a role in Ōrākei’s history. In the 1940s Ōrākei was one of the last places where pre-European kumara varieties were grown. This was a testament to the resilience of the local Maori.

The land wasn’t only significant for its agricultural importance. Takaparawhau Bastion Point is within Ōrākei. This is where you’ll find Ōrākei Marae a traditional meeting place for Ngāti Whātua.

Bastion Point also holds the poignant Savage Memorial. This Art Deco tomb is dedicated to Michael Joseph Savage. He was New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister. He died in office in 1940. The memorial offers breathtaking views over the harbour.

However Ōrākei’s most enduring legacy is its powerful story of resistance. In the 1970s the Crown announced plans to develop Bastion Point for high-income housing. The Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and other activists fought back. They occupied the land for 506 days. This occupation became a landmark in Maori protest. It highlighted the injustices of land alienation.

Eventually in 1988 the government returned Bastion Point and Ōrākei Marae to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. This was part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement. It marked a significant step towards reconciliation. Today Ōrākei’s story serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Maori people. Their struggle for their land and their heritage resonates here. It is a story that continues to shape this place. It is a story whispered on the wind carried on the waves. It is a story that lives in the very heart of Ōrākei.
