From its distinctive twin peaks, Őr-hegy watches over Pilisvörösvár. Őr-hegy offers breathtaking views of the Pilis mountains and the Solymár Valley. Its name, meaning “Guard Hill,” echoes its role in the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution. Atop Őr-hegy, a large wooden beacon, coated in tar, stood ready. It was intended to be set ablaze to warn Buda of approaching enemies. While the beacon was never lit in anger, the name stuck. Before this dramatic period, Őr-hegy was known as Strázsa-hegy, also meaning “Guard Hill,” or Kerek-hegy, meaning “Round Hill.” Interestingly, one old map even mistakenly labels it as Öreg-hegy or “Old Hill.” Őr-hegy’s dolomite rock has been a valuable resource for centuries. Its pure, powdery composition makes it perfect for high-quality building materials, especially fine plaster. The western slope of Őr-hegy, along with the eastern part of the neighboring Zajnát-hegyek, has been quarried extensively. This resulted in a vast quarry, spanning almost two square kilometers. In the 1970s and 80s, a small railway even served the quarry, transporting dolomite to the Pilisvörösvár railway station. This railway line, operated by the Vegyesásvány-bányászati Vállalat (Ásványbánya), also carried the company’s finished and semi-finished products. Although the railway was dismantled in 1982, traces of its path can still be found. A notable reminder is the point where it crossed the Budapest-Esztergom railway line, though the original tunnel has been replaced by a railway embankment. Another visible remnant is the structure where the dolomite railway crossed under Route 10. In 1978, a fine plaster factory, Terranova, began operations on the site. It was the first factory in Hungary dedicated to plaster production. Later known as Weber-Terranova, and now part of Saint-Gobain Construction Products Hungary Kft, the factory continues to utilize Őr-hegy’s valuable dolomite. Despite the quarrying, Őr-hegy remains a popular hiking destination. Its easy access from Budapest, via the Pilisvörösvár railway station and Szabadság-liget stop, contributes to its appeal. The panoramic views and the nearby attractions, like the Kopár Csárda restaurant, Iluska spring, and Klotild Cave, further enhance its popularity.
