Or-Ayahim Özel Balat Hastanesi or the Balat Jewish Hospital. It opened in 1898. Idealistic doctors and philanthropists founded it. Sultan Abdülhamid II gave his blessing. The name itself means Light of Life a beacon of hope in Balat.

The hospital’s beginnings were humble. Eleven thousand gold coins fueled its construction. Donation boxes appeals and even street sales raised the funds. Architect Gabriel Tedechi designed the original building. It was completed in just two years.

Dr Samuel Abravaya Marmaralı was a pivotal figure. He was even Atatürk’s physician. He taught at Haydarpaşa Medical Faculty. He served on the Ottoman Supreme Health Council. He also served as an independent deputy. He dedicated 40 years to Or-Ayahim.

World Wars the Balkan War and the occupation of Istanbul tested the hospital. During World War I it aided the Red Crescent. It cared for wounded soldiers. The staff received an honorary medal for their service. Later it sheltered migrants from Russia and Poland.

Sir Elllie Kadoorie a Baghdad businessman made a significant donation in the 1920s. This donation transformed the hospital. Three large buildings were added. Two still stand today. One was replaced in 2005. The new Alegra Torel Geriatrics Unit opened then. It included 50 beds modern equipment and emergency services.

Or-Ayahim’s story mirrors a Talmudic parable. An old man plants a tree. He knows he won’t see its fruit. But he plants it for future generations. Or-Ayahim is like that tree. Generations have nurtured it. They continue its legacy of healing and service. It is a testament to enduring faith and community. A living legacy of dedication and compassion. This is Or-Ayahim. A light shining in Balat.
