What does opportunity mean to you? At Opportunity Park in Dallas, it means a celebration of history, art, and community. Opportunity Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to the rich legacy of South Dallas. Established in 1969, this almost 20-acre park holds within it powerful stories waiting to be discovered. Opportunity Park houses “Our History,” a remarkable art installation. This installation isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It actively tells the story of South Dallas and its African-American pioneers through four interpretive panels. These panels delve into the area’s early neighborhoods, the first African-American high schools, influential pioneers, and early African-American businesses. The installation features the work of celebrated Dallas photographer R.C. Hickman. His photos bring the past to life. The word “Opportunity” is prominently displayed above the installation. It serves as a constant reminder of the potential within the community. Opportunity Park also features another art piece, “The Conversation.” This work recognizes the contributions of both living and deceased community leaders across eight professions. The park is a testament to the vision of former Councilmember Leo Chaney. In 2003, he envisioned a memorial to inspire the community and share the often-overlooked history of South Dallas.
