In the heart of Lüneburg, a chilling truth lingers. The Opfer der NS-Psychiatrie memorial stands as a stark reminder of a dark chapter in human history. This memorial, opened in 2004 on the grounds of the Lüneburg psychiatric clinic, commemorates the victims of the Nazi “euthanasia” program. The very ground beneath our feet once witnessed unimaginable cruelty.

The Lüneburg State Mental Hospital, established in 1901, became a site of unspeakable horrors under the Nazi regime. The insidious program began in 1934 with the forced sterilization of around 300 patients under the guise of the “Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring.” This was just the beginning. In 1941, the atrocities escalated. Around 500 patients from Lüneburg and other institutions were transported to one of six designated killing centers. There, under the chilling codename “T4,” derived from the program’s headquarters address at Tiergartenstraße 4 in Berlin, they were systematically murdered by SS doctors and nurses using gas.

The Opfer der NS-Psychiatrie memorial doesn’t shy away from this grim reality. It forces us to confront the horrific scale of these crimes. The memorial also highlights the establishment of a “children’s ward” in Lüneburg in the autumn of 1941. This was one of over 30 such wards across the Reich, designed specifically for the murder of children deemed “unfit.” Between 300 and 400 children, their lives tragically cut short, were killed in Lüneburg using injections and pills. The brutality continued. In late 1944, around 60 mentally ill forced laborers, primarily from Poland and the occupied Soviet territories, were gathered in Lüneburg. They were later transported to another killing center, their fate sealed by a regime that saw them as expendable.

The Opfer der NS-Psychiatrie memorial serves not only as a place of mourning but also as a vital educational center. It provides a detailed account of the victims, categorized by the specific Nazi operations that claimed their lives. The memorial tells the stories of the 500 individuals transported from Lüneburg in 1941 as part of the “T4” action, the 300-400 children murdered in the “children’s ward,” and the 60 forced laborers sent to their deaths. The memorial’s location, within the former bathhouse near the iconic water tower of the psychiatric clinic, adds another layer of poignancy to the experience. This building, once a place of cleansing and healing, became a silent witness to the systematic extermination of human life. The Opfer der NS-Psychiatrie memorial in Lüneburg compels us to remember, to learn, and to never forget the innocent lives lost to the horrors of the Nazi regime.
