Located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Onojo boasts a history stretching back to ancient times. Onojo’s very name echoes with the past. It is derived from Ono Castle.

Let’s journey back to the Asuka Period. Imagine a time of political tension. Japan feared invasion from Silla and Tang China. To defend Dazaifu, Ono Castle was constructed. Nearby, Mizuki Castle also stood guard. These fortresses were vital for defense.

Onojo wasn’t just about military strength. The area was also known for its pottery. The Ushikubi Sue Ware Kiln Site is a testament to this. It was a major producer of Sue ware pottery.

The Edo Period saw Onojo largely controlled by the Fukuoka Domain. This was a time of relative peace and stability. However, change was on the horizon.

After the Meiji Restoration, Japan modernized. Ono village was established in 1889. It became a town in 1951. Finally, in 1972, it was raised to city status and renamed Onojo.

Today, Onojo is a vibrant city. It has an estimated population of over 102,000 people. It acts as a commuter town for Fukuoka City. Many residents travel to Fukuoka for work or school.

Onojo also has its own attractions. The Ono Castle ruins are a Special National Historic Site. They offer a glimpse into the city’s defensive past. The Mizuki Castle ruins also hold historical significance.

For those interested in local history, there’s the Onojo Cocoro-no-furusato-kan City Museum. It showcases the city’s natural history, archaeology, and history. It evolved from the Onojo Museum of History.

Nature lovers can enjoy the Ushikubi River. Ducks, turtles, and herons can be seen along its banks. The city’s geography is unique. It is long and narrow, shaped like a gourd.

Onojo also hosts the Daimonji festival in September. This is a time of community celebration. The city is also known for its Chinese bellflower. It is the city’s official flower.

Though modern, Onojo remembers its past. From ancient fortresses to pottery kilns, its history is rich. As you explore Onojo, remember the stories it holds. The story of a city shaped by defense, culture, and community.
