“Oneoneroa, or Shoal Bay as it’s sometimes called, holds a secret.” A mischievous glint twinkled in the tour guide’s eye. “It’s a secret whispered by the tides, etched in the sands, and echoed in the names given by the tangata whenua, the indigenous Māori people.” Oneoneroa, meaning “long sands,” speaks to the sweeping beaches that once graced this bay. Imagine standing here centuries ago, with the warm sand between your toes, the salty air on your face, and the chatter of seabirds overhead. Shoal Bay was a vital resource, a place where Māori gathered shellfish and cultivated kūmara in the rich volcanic soil. It was a place of strategic importance, guarded by the watchful eye of Te Onewa Pā, a fortress located at the Northcote headland. This vantage point offered unparalleled views of the Waitematā Harbour, allowing the inhabitants to protect their precious fisheries and gardens. Now, fast forward to the 19th century. European settlers arrived, drawn by the promise of timber and resources. Sawmills sprang up, hungrily devouring the ancient pūriri forests. Brickworks lined the shores, their kilns belching smoke into the sky. Shoal Bay became a hive of industry. Sulphur Beach, once a popular picnic spot, hosted the Auckland Chemical Works, a venture that ultimately proved unprofitable. The once-pristine sands became a temporary home for laid-up ships and coal hulks. The mid-20th century brought about dramatic changes. The construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the Northern Motorway, while marvels of engineering, came at a cost. Reclaimed land swallowed Sulphur Beach and City of Cork Beach whole, their sandy stretches now buried beneath concrete and asphalt. But despite the transformations, echoes of the past remain. Oneoneroa, Shoal Bay, still whispers its stories. The godwits still arrive from Alaska, seeking refuge in the estuary. The New Zealand dotterel still nests above the tide line, foraging in the shallows. And the name, Oneoneroa, a testament to the long sands, endures, a reminder of the bay’s rich and layered history.
