Across the shimmering waters of the Manukau Harbour, Onehunga’s story unfolds. Onehunga, a suburb steeped in history, whispers tales of ancient battles and bustling ports. Onehunga sits just eight kilometers south of Auckland’s city center, near the iconic Maungakiekie, also known as One Tree Hill. Onehunga wasn’t always a suburb. It began as a vital port, a gateway to the world. During the 19th century, ships from Great Britain, laden with goods and passengers, sailed into Onehunga via South Africa and Australia. This route shaved days off the journey compared to sailing around North Cape. The Manukau Harbour, however, was a fickle mistress. The tragic sinking of HMS Orpheus in 1863, with the loss of 180 lives, serves as a stark reminder of its treacherous nature. Despite the risks, coastal steamships continued to ply the waters between Auckland and Wellington, via Wanganui and Onehunga, carrying the bulk of passenger and freight traffic. Onehunga offered the fastest route to Wellington until 1908. Even then, steamers from Onehunga continued to connect Auckland with ports along the western coast of the North Island, like Raglan, Kawhia, and Waitara. Onehunga was a hub for the Northern Steamship Company, servicing the west coast up to Awhitu, Hokianga, and Waiuku. The completion of the North Island Main Trunk railway in 1908 brought a decline to Onehunga’s port. Larger ships favored the deeper Waitematā Harbour, and the railway offered a faster, more efficient way to move goods and people. The port, though much smaller than its glory days, still serves coastal traders, fishing boats, and companies dealing in cement and sand. Onehunga, always resilient, reinvented itself as a shopping and service center as Auckland’s suburbs expanded. This growth brought its own challenges. The relocation of the Municipal Abattoir to nearby Westfield and Southdown led to toxic discharges into the harbor, impacting water quality and impacting Onehunga’s potential as a seaside resort. In more recent times, Onehunga has seen a revival. Restoration projects have breathed new life into the area, with many of the 1920s bungalows and earlier villas being lovingly restored. The opening of Taumanu Reserve in 2015, a reclaimed area boasting beaches, green spaces, and a boat ramp, has reconnected Onehunga with its waterfront. Onehunga offers a blend of the old and the new. From the historic Onehunga Post Office, built in 1901, to the modern Dress Smart outlet mall, Onehunga’s story continues to evolve.
