Marvelous isn’t she? The Ondina del Plata. This marble masterpiece stands before us a testament to Argentinian artistry.

Created by Lucio Correa Morales Argentina’s founder of sculpture the Ondina del Plata is more than just a pretty face. It’s a symbol a tribute to the American woman. While she evokes Scandinavian water nymphs her essence is distinctly South American.

Correa Morales a student of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Florence poured his heart into this piece. The original plaster model now resides in Mendoza’s Museum of Fine Arts a testament to his skill. This marble version is the first of its kind. Its placement in the heart of the La Primavera fountain is no accident.

Did you know? The Ondina del Plata wasn’t always here. It once graced Avenida de Las Palmeras now Avenida Sarmiento in Palermo. The move to the Botanical Garden happened sometime before 1898. The statue is 160 meters tall. It’s a rather sensual figure draped in a translucent garment. Her posture suggests movement. A gentle smile plays on her lips as she casually gathers her hair. The breeze plays a part in her pose.

Sadly the Ondina del Plata has suffered damage over the years. A broken arm a cracked foot and a damaged base have sent her to the MOA for restoration. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who keep these works alive. The Ondina del Plata is a precious piece of history. It’s an example of Argentinian talent and resilience. Let’s appreciate the beauty and the story behind this iconic statue. We are lucky to see her here today in such a beautiful setting.
