Was Omid Sabz Circle always this quiet? It’s hard to imagine, looking at the empty streets and half-built houses, that this was supposed to be Kabul’s model town. This is Omid Sabz Circle, which means “Green Hope” in Dari. The land was bought, developed and sold starting about fifteen years ago by Haji Nabi. He was a powerful man, the brother of former Vice-President Khalili. The project promised paved roads, parks, schools, even cultural centers. Plots were sold at prices ranging from 120,000 to 200,000 US dollars. But as you can see, many of those promises remain unfulfilled. Omid Sabz Circle stands as a stark reminder of the complexities of development in Kabul. While the initial vision was ambitious, the reality reflects the challenges and sometimes, unkept promises that mark the city’s story.
