A thunderous roar echoes across the Barra da Tijuca. It’s the sound of a packed stadium. The Olympic Tennis Centre vibrates with energy.

Welcome to the Olympic Tennis Centre in Rio de Janeiro. More than just a tennis venue this is a legacy of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It stands proudly in the Barra Olympic Park. This magnificent complex hosted world-class athletes. Wheelchair tennis events also took place here. A testament to the inclusive spirit of the Games.

The Centre’s main court boasts a capacity of 10000 spectators. Two temporary arenas added another 8000. Imagine the atmosphere during those thrilling matches. The energy was electric. Every point was a battle. Every serve a potential game-changer.

Designed by Gerkan Marg and Partners and Schlaich Bergermann Partner the Centre is a marvel of engineering. Construction started in 2013. It wasn’t without its challenges. The city canceled the construction contract 200 days before the Games. A significant financial penalty was imposed for delays. But against all odds the Centre opened in 2016. Ready to welcome the world.

In December 2015 the centre court received a prestigious name. It was named after Maria Esther Bueno. She was a legendary Brazilian tennis player. The first woman to win all four Grand Slam doubles titles in a single year. This naming marked the first event held at the Barra Olympic Park. 75 Brazilian players competed.

The Centre’s legacy extends beyond tennis. Beach volleyball competitions filled the main court. 210 tons of sand transformed the hard court into a sandy paradise. The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour even used the facility.

The future of the Olympic Tennis Centre is still being determined. Initially slated for privatization discussions continue. Its ongoing use is a complex issue. It highlights the challenges of maintaining Olympic legacy projects. Yet the centre remains a powerful symbol. A symbol of Rio’s hosting of the 2016 Games. It stands as a reminder of the excitement the athleticism and the spirit of competition. It will continue to inspire future generations.
