Hidden beneath the bustling modernity of Bremen’s Weserbahnhof lies a secret whispered on the winds. This is the story of the Ölmühle, the oil mill of Franz Köcheln. It stood proudly on the Stephanitorsbollwerk, west of Bremen’s old city. In 2012, its ghostly presence reemerged. Archaeologists unearthed its foundation, a grand ring of large-format bricks, a silent testament to its industrious past. Franz Daniel Köcheln, the mill’s namesake, received his building permit in 1810 during Napoleon’s reign over Bremen. Before Köcheln’s mill, only one other oil mill existed, a “failed facility at Wolfskuhle” in Huckelriede. Köcheln’s Ölmühle had a grand purpose: to process rapeseed into oil, destined for export to Holland. No Bremen builder dared to tackle such an innovative project. So Köcheln brought in a master miller from Groningen, along with his skilled assistants. One assistant, Berend Erling, proved exceptionally talented. Erling remained in Bremen after the Ölmühle’s construction. He oversaw its operation but found the work insufficient to support himself. He began optimizing and repairing other mills in Bremen, much to the chagrin of the local Zimmergewerk, the carpenters’ guild. They attempted to bar him from working but Erling, with Köcheln’s support and testimonials from twelve millers, appealed to the Senate. He was granted the title of “Freymeister,” allowing him to work independent of the guild. The Ölmühle’s story, however, has a melancholic end. New constructions for the Weserbahnhof disrupted the wind currents, slowing the mill’s output. The once-thriving Ölmühle became unprofitable and was demolished in the 1860s. Though its physical presence vanished, its foundation, rediscovered centuries later, allows us to glimpse into a forgotten era of Bremen’s industrial history. The Ölmühle stands as a testament to innovation, ambition, and the enduring power of the wind.
