Olivet Baptist Church began as an independent church in 1941. Joseph P. Tyssowski, an attorney and Baptist preacher from Texas, launched it. In February 1941, the church became a Southern Baptist Church. It was then named Olivet Baptist Church.
By 1943, Olivet Baptist Church had paid off its Young Street property. Church leaders started a building fund for new facilities. In 1944, Olivet purchased the Honolulu Vocational School. It was located in the same block but faced South Beretania Street.
Olivet broke ground for a new worship center on November 13, 1949. Construction was completed in just 11 months. During this time, Olivet Baptist Church experienced significant growth. Sunday School attendance reached a record high of 1,016. Sunday evening training saw 217 attendees.
Today, Olivet Baptist Church remains dedicated to Honolulu. It continues to serve as a beacon of light for Oahu. Throughout its history, Olivet has remained committed to preaching the Word of God.
