The tree marked the northern edge of the Fort Dearborn Reservation and the boundary of Billy Caldwell’s Reserve. This reserve, named after Chief Sauganash (Billy Caldwell), was a 1,600-acre plot granted to him for his role in negotiating treaties with local tribes. The Old Treaty Elm marked a trail leading to Lake Geneva. Sadly, time took its toll on the tree, and despite efforts to preserve it, it succumbed to disease in 1934.
