The Old Pumphouse, built in 1905, wasn’t always a theatre. It began as the heart of Takapuna’s water supply, drawing freshwater from Lake Pupuke for the growing communities of Devonport, Takapuna, Birkenhead, and Northcote. Imagine the hustle and bustle as workers tended the massive pump, powered by a coal-fired furnace, sending life-giving water to thirsty homes. The Old Pumphouse diligently served its purpose until 1941. Then, the Waitakere Ranges became Auckland’s primary water source. The pumphouse fell silent, the rhythmic chug replaced by the quiet lapping of the lake against its brick walls. The building gradually declined, facing potential demolition. But the community rallied, recognizing the historical significance of the Old Pumphouse. In the late 1960s, a group of art enthusiasts and history buffs formed the North Shore Theatre and Arts Trust. They saved the building from destruction. Their vision transformed the Old Pumphouse from a derelict pumping station into a vibrant community theatre and arts centre. The first performance graced its stage in 1977, marking a new chapter in its life. Today, the Old Pumphouse continues to thrive as a beloved venue. It hosts diverse performances, from plays and musicals to comedy shows and concerts. This building, once a source of water, now nourishes the community with art and culture. Even the main auditorium carries a special name. It’s the Genevieve Becroft Auditorium, honoring a key figure in the pumphouse’s preservation and a prominent patron of the arts. The Old Pumphouse stands as a testament to community spirit and the power of adaptive reuse, a unique blend of history and creativity.
