Can you imagine engineering a miracle? That’s what happened beneath the Old Post Office Museum in Auckland. This grand old building, the former Chief Post Office, stands as a testament to both Edwardian elegance and modern engineering ingenuity. The Old Post Office Museum first opened its doors in 1912. It served as more than just a post office. It was the city’s communication hub, a place for public announcements, welcoming dignitaries, and even bidding farewell to soldiers heading off to war. The building’s exterior exudes a timeless charm. However, behind the facade was a labyrinth of corridors, offices, and small rooms. Over time, the CPO fell into disuse and neglect, facing the threat of demolition. Its salvation came in 2003 with the extension of the railway into the city center. The building was then converted into ticketing and access facilities for the new Britomart Station. Fast forward to 2017, and the Old Post Office Museum faced a new challenge: the City Rail Link. The construction of tunnels directly beneath this historic landmark presented a complex engineering puzzle. Some of the original foundation columns obstructed the path of the CRL tunnels. The immense weight of the building needed to be transferred to new foundations without causing any damage. This involved one of the most intricate engineering feats undertaken in New Zealand. The CPO was carefully shifted onto temporary foundations while a 14-meter-deep trench was excavated in front of the building. This trench allowed workers and machinery access to tackle the complex task of transferring the CPO’s weight onto new, permanent foundations outside the line of the CRL tunnels. Massive 340-tonne steel beams were installed to span between rows of new piles built on either side of the tunnels. The building’s weight was carefully transferred onto these beams. This allowed the construction of permanent reinforced concrete foundations below. The CPO reopened in April 2021, marking the successful completion of this remarkable project. The restoration work not only preserved the historic facade but also meticulously reinstated the interior, including its distinctive curved skylights and original building materials. Today, the Old Post Office Museum stands proudly once again, a symbol of Auckland’s history and a testament to human ingenuity.
