“Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the OLD PATH, where is the good way and if you walk there in.” These words from Jeremiah resonate deeply here at Old Path Church of God in Christ. This church is more than just a building. It’s a family bound by faith and a shared journey.
Old Path Church of God in Christ is a beacon of faith in Chicago. It stands as a testament to community, discipleship, and unwavering dedication. This church is affiliated with the Church of God in Christ. It falls under the Third Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Illinois. Bishop Robert R. Sanders leads this jurisdiction. Mother Joyce Naomi Dickerson Wells heads the women’s department. Within this structure, Old Path is part of The St. Joe B. Reed Memorial District. Supt. C.H. Benton is the pastor.
Old Path is a place to believe, belong, and become. It welcomes all who seek spiritual growth and fellowship. It encourages learning, listening, and praying. The church actively works together to reach out to the community. Old Path shares the Good News of Christ with everyone.
But there is another church named Old Path Church of God in Christ. Its story began on July 15, 1962. Supt. Harold Johnson, Sr. and Mother Mary Johnson founded it. About 25 family members joined them. The first services took place on Napa Street. Just five years later, in January 1967, they burned the mortgage. Bishop E.B. Stewart presided over this celebration.
In 1985, Supt. Johnson, Sr. wanted to remodel the Napa Street sanctuary. But God had a different plan. In August 1988, construction began at 500 Arkansas Street. This location was directly across from Napa Street. Supt. Harold Johnson, Sr., Supt. Eugene Reynolds, Deacon Michael Lewis, and Elder Earl Lewis led the construction. In July 1992, the new sanctuary was complete. Supt. Johnson, Sr. renamed the church Old Path “Miracle Cathedral” COGIC. Miraculous events had occurred during construction. The mortgage on the second sanctuary was burned on July 14, 2002. Bishop Albert Galbraith officiated.
After Supt. Harold Johnson, Sr.’s death in August 2005, his son took over. On October 6, 2005, Bishop Galbraith appointed Supt. Harold Johnson II as pastor. He is committed to community outreach. Old Path conducts many outreach efforts. These include Super Soul Saturday and a Day of Giving. The Day of Giving supports victims of domestic violence and displaced families. Supt. Johnson partners with international missions. He provides supplies to schools and orphanages in Brazil.
