Established in 1854, Old Mortlake Burial Ground whispers tales of London’s past. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s relentless pace. This is a place where social reformers, naval officers, and literary figures found their final resting place.

Old Mortlake Burial Ground is managed by Richmond upon Thames Borough Council. It is located on Avenue Gardens. The cemetery expanded in 1877.

Let’s wander through the grounds. Notice the memorials. They tell stories of lives well-lived. Among those interred here is Sir Edwin Chadwick. He was a social reformer who dedicated his life to improving public health.

Then there’s Rear Admiral Lord William FitzRoy. He was a Royal Navy officer and Member of Parliament. His grave is marked by an obelisk. It stands as a testament to his distinguished service.

Charles Dickens Jr also rests here. He was the eldest son of the famous novelist. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a writer and editor. Georgina Hogarth is also buried here. She was Charles Dickens’ sister-in-law and housekeeper. She was also his advisor. After his death, she edited two volumes of his collected letters.

Admiral Sir Erasmus Ommanney is another notable figure buried in Old Mortlake Burial Ground. He was a Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. He navigated treacherous waters.

Thomas German Reed is also here with his wife Priscilla Horton. They created the German Reed Entertainments. These family-friendly musical plays were known for their refined nature.

Old Mortlake Burial Ground reflects community history. In 1854, the parish purchased land. The land purchase cost 360 pounds. The land originally belonged to the London and South Western Railway. Securing the land involved intricate negotiations.

The construction of the cemetery was not without its challenges. There were disputes. One involved Patrick Hurley. He was an Irish Catholic murdered in a local pub. His burial in the Protestant ground caused a near riot. Police had to be called.

Over the years, Old Mortlake Burial Ground has undergone changes. A chapel once stood here. It was demolished in 1969.

Today, Old Mortlake Burial Ground offers limited burial options. New graves are rare. Burials still occur in existing graves.

Take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere. Consider the lives of those who rest here. They helped shape London’s history. Their stories continue to resonate.
