Here we are at the Old Church, a site where echoes of empires and faiths intertwine. This is not just another stop on our tour. This place is a testament to Antalya’s layered past. The Old Church, also known as antik kilise, stands as a silent witness to centuries of change.

Originally, this area hosted a Roman temple. This shows the deep roots of Antalya’s history. In the 5th to 6th centuries, the temple’s ruins were used to build a Byzantine church. This marked a significant shift in the city’s religious landscape. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it became a vital center for the Christian community.

Over the centuries, the Old Church has transformed. It became a mosque three times. It also functioned as a shared space where Christians and Muslims coexisted. This unique arrangement reflects a period of relative harmony and cultural exchange.

The Turkish historian Evren Dayar noted that even after being converted into a mosque, a church existed here. This shared space existed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This sharing underscores the complex interplay of cultures and religions in Antalya.

However, conflict and destruction marked its history as well. A fire in 1896 devastated the area. It left the Old Church in ruins. For a long time it was known as the Kesik Minare, or Broken Minaret.

Today, the Old Church has been restored. It stands as a mosque. When you enter, you’ll find yourself in a cross-shaped chapel. This is a reminder of its Byzantine past. The southern side’s cross-section is still visible today. An archway from the former temple marks the entry.

Look closely at the ancient capitals. They showcase the heart symbol of God’s love. You will also find the infinity symbol of eternity. These symbols give witness to the church’s former glory. Roman acanthus designs depict immorality and healing.

The northern aisle, once a communion area, displays crosses embedded in the walls. These crosses are intertwined with Roman acanthus designs. Through the glass flooring, you can see the remains of a large broken cross. This offers insight into how the Muslim builders treated Christian symbols.

Even outside, crosses are subtly embedded in the stonework. On the north side of the building, a cross is set in stone between the windows. In the back courtyard, a broken grave lies hidden. Crosses lie under the northeast corner fence.

The Old Church embodies the spirit of Antalya. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It also reflects the ebb and flow of religious beliefs. It is a place where the past is not forgotten. Instead, it is woven into the present. As we leave this site, consider the enduring power of faith, resilience, and cultural exchange.
