Consider the walls of the Old Admiralty Building. They have silently witnessed pivotal moments in British history. Westminster’s grand Old Admiralty Building serves as the backdrop for many important ceremonial events. Within its walls, significant and classified events unfolded during the 20th century.

The Old Admiralty Building stands as a Grade II listed structure. Its architecture boasts red brick and Portland stone. Slate and lead roofs top it off. French Grand Siecle and English Baroque details adorn the building. Inside, mosaic floors and intricate metalwork balustrades add to its beauty.

Originally, the Admiralty was a government department. It oversaw the British navy. In 1964, the Ministry of Defence replaced it. The Old Admiralty Building forms a key part of the historic Admiralty complex. This complex includes the Ripley Building, Admiralty House, Admiralty Arch, and the Citadel.

Designed as a government office block, the Old Admiralty Building was constructed in phases. Work began in 1894 and concluded in 1905. It replaced smaller townhouses. These earlier buildings could not accommodate the growing number of civil servants. The architectural firm Leeming and Leeming designed the building. John and Joseph Leeming, two brothers from Halifax, comprised this firm.

A refurbishment project took place between 2014 and 2020. BDP led the project. Wilmott Dixon Interiors was the main contractor. The work involved structural alterations and asbestos management. New chillers were installed. Heritage conservation work was completed. Around 400 oak doors were covered and removed.

The Old Admiralty Building has been at the center of history. British naval intelligence devised “Operation Mincemeat” here. This plot aimed to deceive Hitler and the Germans about the invasion of Sicily.

Several notable figures have worked in the Old Admiralty Building. These include Viscount Cunningham, Dame Victoire Ridsdale, and Baron Sir John Arbuthnot Fisher. Ian Fleming, the author of “James Bond,” also worked here. Winston Churchill was another prominent figure associated with the building.

The Government Art Collection is housed in one part of the Old Admiralty Building. Established in 1899, the GAC is a national collection of British art. It includes historic, modern, and contemporary works. These artworks are displayed in government buildings in the UK and worldwide. Locations include Downing Street, government departments, and British embassies. The collection features over 15,000 works of art from the 16th century to the present day.

The Old Admiralty Building sits directly on one side of Horseguards Parade. Its main entrance faces Admiralty Arch on Spring Gardens. Its original construction finished in 1905. The building covers almost one hectare of land in Whitehall.

Between 2016 and 2021, the Old Admiralty Building underwent significant restoration and modernization. Classic Lifts Limited replaced and modernized six lifts. Brexit caused delays when importing products. To deliver the project on time, workers put in accelerated hours.

Today, the Old Admiralty Building stands not only as an architectural marvel but also as a living testament to British naval history and ingenuity. Its walls continue to inspire awe and respect.
