Can you imagine standing in front of this unassuming house on Maze Hill? It seems like any other London home from the outside. But behind this simple facade, lies a remarkable story one of London’s most influential abolitionists. Let me reveal a hidden fragment of London’s history right here before your very eyes.

This blue plaque you see in front of you, commemorating Olaudah Equiano. Olaudah Equiano was a man of African descent, born around 1745. At the tender age of 11, he was ripped away from his home in Nigeria and endured the horrors of the Atlantic slave trade. Eventually, he arrived in Virginia, where he was sold to a Royal Naval officer named Michael Pascal. After years of serving his master, Olaudah Equiano made it to London in 1754. This building on Maze Hill is not just a house, but a stepping stone in his remarkable life journey.

Equiano was particularly fortunate to meet the Guerin sisters. They were cousins of Pascal and became his patrons. The sisters introduced him to the world of education and Christianity. They helped him learn to read and write and were instrumental in his baptism at St Margaret’s Westminster in 1759. But Equiano’s journey did not end there. He went on to become a naval seaman and, later, gained his freedom in 1766.

In 1767, he returned to London and instantly sought out the Guerin sisters. He found them living at 111 Maze Hill and spent two weeks at the house. He was grateful for their influence. But his focus was now on achieving success through hard work and education. He embarked on a career as a hairdresser and, while not forgetting his struggles, he set about making a name for himself. He traveled the world, learning and observing all that he could.

This is where it all began. This was the home of Equiano’s mentors. It’s a reminder that the path to freedom and success can start in the unlikeliest of places. So, as you look at this humble blue plaque, you are looking at a part of London’s history through the eyes of a man who was not just a survivor, but a true changemaker. And remember, his story is a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience that lives on today.
