A century ago did you know this spot hummed with the sounds of hammers and rivets? We stand before Øksnemølle Bro a bridge with a rich history. More than just a way to cross the Aarhus River it connects Aarhus’ old town to the newer areas near the railway station. The project sparked heated debates. The cost was a major concern. But thanks to citizen fundraising and a generous donation from businessman Hans Broge construction began in 1881. Skilled harbor and town engineers designed this structure. Royal building inspector Th. Walther added the elegant ornamentation. Over the years Øksnemølle Bro has undergone changes. The most recent in 1982 involved replacing the old steel framework. The area underneath had grown dark and gloomy. City architect Ole Oestergaard and Carl Bro A/S redesigned the bridge making it as wide as Søndergade. Concrete columns support the main bridge. Steel columns shaped like trees support the side bridges. Today the space beneath Øksnemølle Bro is vibrant and welcoming. Light streams in. Head down the stairs or take the elevator. You’ll discover a lively space filled with restaurants and bars. Øksnemølle Bro isn’t just a bridge it’s a testament to community spirit. It’s a connection between past and present a meeting place for Aarhus’ citizens and visitors. A symbol of a city’s growth and resilience. Its story echoes with the sounds of progress and community. Enjoy the modern beauty that stands here today.
