The Yamuna’s gentle whisper. It has sung a timeless song beside Okhla Village. For centuries its waters have flowed past this ancient settlement. A silent witness to the rise and fall of empires.

Okhla Village stands as one of Delhi’s oldest inhabited areas. Nestled near the banks of the mighty Yamuna River. Its history stretches far back into the past. Long before the British arrived. The construction of the Okhla canal in 1874 by the British. This marked a turning point in the village’s history. It became known as Okhla Head.

The Okhla barrage too is a testament to the British era. A crucial structure. It serves as the starting point of the Agra Canal. A lifeline for agriculture. Today it is also renowned for its proximity to the Okhla Bird Sanctuary. A haven for migratory birds. Thousands of them visit every September. Shovellers pintail common teal gadwall and blue-winged teal among them. Further down the canal lies the Keetham Lake National Bird Sanctuary. Another vital ecosystem.

But Okhla is more than just its natural beauty. In 1925 Jamia Millia Islamia. A prestigious central university. Found its home here. This greatly contributed to Okhla’s cultural and intellectual growth. The Okhla Mandi an important wholesale market. Thrives in the village. Contributing significantly to its economic life.

The Okhla Industrial Estate is another cornerstone of the area. Established by the National Small Industries Corporation in 1958. It provided a boost to small-scale industries. It’s now divided into three phases. Phase III is particularly noteworthy. A testament to the design of British architect Mr Walter George. Famous for his work on Parliament House.

Okhla Village has expanded significantly over the years. Many residential areas now surround the village. Zakir Nagar Batla House Jogabai Extension and many more have grown up around the original settlement. This expansion reflects Okhla’s dynamism. Its ability to adapt and grow.

Despite its growth Okhla still faces challenges. Civic hygiene is a major concern. Overfilling garbage presents a significant problem. The Yamuna’s pollution remains another issue. It poses a threat to the delicate ecosystem and health of the community. Still Okhla Village stands strong. A vibrant community with a rich history. A lively present and a promising future. It continues to thrive near the banks of the Yamuna. A timeless blend of history tradition and progress.
