Once covered in vineyards, Óhegy in Budapest’s 10th district offers a surprising blend of history and modern life. Óhegy, meaning “Old Mountain,” rises 148 meters and provides a unique vantage point overlooking the city. Imagine standing here in the 19th century, surrounded by lush vineyards. The iconic Csősztorony, or Guard Tower, stands tall. It was built in 1844 to protect the precious grapes from thieves. This romantic-style tower, a symbol of Óhegy, is a blend of architectural styles and now houses a bistro. Local officials hope to relocate the local history collection to the Csősztorony, allowing visitors to climb the tower and enjoy the panoramic views. The vineyards sadly disappeared after the phylloxera outbreak in 1875. But their legacy lives on, even depicted in a painting at the renowned Torockó Restaurant in Kőbánya. Óhegy Park, the largest public park in Kőbánya after Népliget, sprawls across the area. It is a surprisingly clean and well-maintained space, enjoyed by dog walkers, runners, and families. This vibrant park replaced former mining grounds, showcasing the district’s transformation and defying stereotypes. Beneath the park lies a network of cellars, once used by the winemakers and later for air raid shelters. These cellars were filled in the 1970s. A tragic accident in 2004, when the ground collapsed beneath a dog walker, highlighted the dangers of the area’s past. The resulting closure and extensive work ensured the park’s safety. Now, a designated dog run occupies the once-hazardous area. Óhegy in Kőbánya is more than just a park. It’s a testament to the district’s evolving identity. A place where history intertwines with modern life.
