Office Port Bonn

Along the bustling Friedrich-Ebert-Allee stands the Office Port Bonn. It’s more than just a modern office complex. It’s a testament to Bonn’s evolving identity. The Office Port Bonn, completed in 2008, is part of Deutsche Telekom’s headquarters. Imagine this site before the sleek glass and steel. This very ground once housed the British Embassy, built in the early 1950s. Later, it became home to the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, the CDU party headquarters. Even the German Red Cross and Bonnfinanz had their central offices here. The reunification of Germany in 1999 brought change. The government moved to Berlin. Many buildings in Bonn were suddenly vacant. Deutsche Telekom, having acquired the land in 1998, decided to reshape the area. The old structures, including the historically significant Red Cross building, were demolished. The last to go was the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, dramatically imploded in 2003. The Office Port Bonn wasn’t the original plan. Initial construction, set for 2004, was postponed due to cost-cutting measures. A new architectural competition led to the selection of Cologne-based architect Thomas van den Valentyn. His design, a 60 million euro project, brought the Office Port Bonn to life. The project was managed by Telekom’s subsidiary, Corpus Sireo Asset Management Commercial GmbH. Investors included Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (LEG) and FOM GmbH. LEG financed the building and leases it to Telekom. Construction was handled by Hochtief. The foundation stone was laid in May 2006. A year later, the topping-out ceremony marked a major milestone. By mid-2008, Telekom employees began moving into the four U-shaped buildings. The Office Port Bonn complex spans an impressive 20,000 square meters. It stretches 260 meters long and 49.5 meters wide along Friedrich-Ebert-Allee. The buildings cleverly step down in height. Six stories face the bustling B9. Three and four-story wings face the quieter residential Johanniterviertel, minimizing the impact on the neighborhood. A vast underground parking garage provides 644 spaces. Even the surrounding area benefited from the project. Public funds enhanced the B9 with bike paths, green spaces, and pedestrian walkways. A green corridor, the Grünzug Bundesviertel, was created as a buffer to the A562, boosting biodiversity. A pedestrian bridge, completed in 2010, connects the Office Port Bonn directly to the main Telekom headquarters across the street.
