What do you call a chapel named after an artwork? This, my friends, is the Ölbergkapelle. You might be surprised to learn it wasn’t always known by this name. The Ölbergkapelle actually inherited its name from a previous structure. This older chapel, built in 1840, housed a significant artwork – the “Ölberg-Gruppe” sculpted by Fidelis Schönlaub. When city architect Hans Grässel rebuilt the chapel in 1905, the name stuck. He incorporated the sculpture into his new design. Grässel, known for his masterful cemetery designs, added a touch of his signature style to the Ölbergkapelle. Look closely at the gable. You’ll see a detailed relief depicting the Lamb of God, a symbol deeply rooted in Christian faith.
