Oeiras is more than just a location it is a testament to Portugal’s resilience and innovation. The story of Oeiras begins long before its formal founding. Early settlements thrived here due to the mild climate. The Tagus River offered access to water. The quality of the soil was also advantageous. Its location at the mouth of the Tagus River also attracted settlers.

Later, Oeiras played a crucial role in Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. It became Lisbon’s industrial and commercial warehouse. The Gunpowder Factory in Barcarena was essential. It supported the expansion of Portuguese dominions. Fortifications arose along the coast protecting Lisbon. The Fort of São Lourenço da Cabeça Seca stood on a tiny islet. The Fort of São Julião da Barra guarded the Tagus estuary.

The municipality of Oeiras was officially founded in 1759. King Joseph I rewarded his minister the Marquis of Pombal. The reward was for rebuilding Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake. A royal charter granted jurisdiction over Oeiras to the Marquis. He became the first Count of Oeiras. The village was elevated to town status. Oeiras gained municipal status soon after.

Under the Marquis of Pombal’s influence Oeiras flourished. He promoted innovation and supported local economic activities. In 1770 the first agricultural and industrial fair took place here. This event contributed to fishing shelters and a new customs house. The estate of the Marquis of Pombal remains in its original form today. It features gardens a palace and agricultural buildings.

Oeiras faced challenges in the 19th century. The municipality was briefly abolished but was reestablished. New industries replaced declining agricultural production. The Lisbon-Cascais railway link supported this industrial growth.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Oeiras transformed. Coastal leisure activities attracted the Portuguese elite. People believed the air and beach waters had therapeutic benefits. The construction of National Roadway 6 allowed more people to visit. Beach chalets and summer cottages appeared.

After 1940 Oeiras became a suburb of Lisbon. Residential growth increased along the coast. Illegal urban settlements also emerged. By the 1980s Oeiras established its own economic identity. It focused on science information technology and communications.

Today Oeiras is known for its high standard of living. It has become a center for new technologies and service industries. Oeiras has received awards as the “Best Municipality to Work”.

Oeiras boasts a diverse geography. It sits along the Tagus River near the ocean. The coastline features natural coves and beaches like Praia da Torre and Praia de Santo Amaro de Oeiras. Green areas include the Estação Agronómica Nacional and the Jamor sports complex.

The climate in Oeiras is Mediterranean. Summers are warm and dry. Winters are mild and wet.

Oeiras is an economic powerhouse. Many multinational companies have offices here including Google Nestlé and McDonald’s. Science technology and business parks thrive here.

Oeiras offers many sights. The Palace of Marquês de Pombal and the Palace of the Royal Estate in Caxias stand as monuments. Leisure facilities include the Jamor sports complex and the Parque dos Poetas.
