Perched dramatically on a cliffside, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco awaits. Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, this “Palace entirely dedicated to Art and Science” is more than just a museum. Let me share some of its wonders.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco stands 85 meters above the sea. Its impressive facade uses 100000 tons of stone. Twenty oceanographic research vessels are inscribed on it.

Prince Albert I wanted to make ocean study accessible. He filled the Oceanographic Museum with specimens from his explorations. Over half the natural history collections came from his 28 campaigns.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau directed the Oceanographic Museum for 31 years. He captured the first photos of microscopic plankton. His team filmed at 1000 feet underwater in a submersible. Cousteau’s documentary won an Academy Award.

Outside, see the yellow submarine Anorep I. Cousteau used it for expeditions. It was built the same year the Beatles released “Yellow Submarine”.

Inside the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco are over 350 fish species. There are also 6000 specimens of marine life. You will find rare and endangered creatures here.

The Oceanographic Museum’s monitoring systems are very advanced. They track salinity, temperature, and oxygen. Staff are alerted to any changes ensuring the well-being of fragile marine life.

The Oceanographic Museum breeds clownfish and seahorses. They care for injured sea creatures. Later they release them back into the ocean. The museum protects biodiversity including brown groupers. It also preserves Posidonia seagrass.

Around 100 aquariums teem with life. See sharks and jellyfish. Admire rays and coral. Watch tropical fish and seahorses. The touch pool lets you pet baby sharks.

The main aquarium is in the basement. Here are tropical and Mediterranean species. A moray eel has lived here for over 30 years. The Shark Lagoon replicates a coral reef. It holds 450000 liters of seawater.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco was the first to reproduce coral in captivity. This coral came from the Red Sea. The museum’s living coral is truly unique.

Upstairs explore Natural History exhibits. Oceanomania displays models and diving gear. See fossils and scientific tools. Vintage books fill the cabinet of curiosities.

The Salle Albert Ier focuses on Prince Albert I’s expeditions. See photos and nautical models. A replica shows his ship L’Hirondelle’s laboratory.

The Whale Room features whale skeletons. Orca and seal skeletons hang above. Life-size models display marine specimens. Jars hold pickled sea life.

Interactive screens offer more information. Virtual reality enhances the experience. Temporary exhibits showcase art and science connected to the sea.

The building was designed by Paul Delefortrie. It features sea life mosaics and sculptures. The rooftop terrace gives panoramic views. See Port Hercules and Monaco from above. A cafeteria sits on the roof. Turtle Island is home to turtles from Mali.

Remember Prince Albert I’s vision. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco inspires love and knowledge of the sea.
