The Lisbon Oceanarium opened in 1998. It’s nestled within Parque das Nações the site of Expo ’98. Designed by Peter Chermayeff the Oceanarium’s architecture is striking. Some say it resembles an aircraft carrier a floating marvel over an artificial lagoon.
Inside a vast central tank dominates. It holds five million liters of water. Imagine a 7-meter deep expanse teeming with life. Sharks rays barracudas and groupers glide past. Sunfish one of the aquarium’s main attractions lazily drift through. Look closely. You might spot a moray eel peeking from a crevice.
Four smaller tanks surround the central one each depicting a different habitat. Explore the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic. Encounter playful sea otters and penguins. Journey to the frigid Antarctic. Witness the graceful leopard seal. Dive into the warm Indian Ocean’s coral reefs a riot of color and life. Finally experience the vast Pacific Ocean.
The Oceanarium houses an incredible 16000 animals. These represent 450 species. Did you know it’s one of the few aquariums in the world to successfully house sunfish? Their care is demanding. The Oceanarium once housed sea otters named Eusébio and Amália. They were named after a famous soccer player and a fado singer respectively. Sadly both passed away. Their daughters Micas and Maré now live there after a stint in a Rotterdam zoo.
Beyond the main exhibits more than 25 themed aquariums await. Each showcases a unique aspect of the marine world. The Oceanarium isn’t merely a place of entertainment.
